Dressing Out of the Box

“Are you really going to wear that?”

If you’re a man chances are you’ve heard that question from a significant other, friend, sibling or even your parents at least once. The phrase usually meant a muchdreaded trip to the mall, with hours spent trudging from store to store and waiting for someone to help you.

But for men in Gainesville, those days are over thanks to John Isaac’s Clothing! Owner John Mitchell knows that not every professional has the time, energy or desire to shop for a well-balanced wardrobe. John Isaac’s does the work for you, from the planning and measuring to the shopping and delivery – all done within a price range that fits most any budget.

“Guys in general don’t like to shop,” Mitchell said. “And when they do, they’re very ‘rutted;’ they buy the same things over and over again.” He said that once men find something they like, they’ll often stick with it for fear of trying something new that might not work.

The result is a wardrobe full of “holes” as Mitchell puts it – areas that haven’t been paid enough attention. Mitchell explains that this is particularly true for business professionals who need several types of clothing such as professional, business casual, after hours and weekend wear; a man may have plenty of business casual attire but only two or three shirts to wear out on a date. “They neglect an entire part of their wardrobe,” he said. “Part of what I intend to do is help them expand their wardrobe without having a hundred different things in their closet. It’s not that hard to do; it just takes planning.”

Since an early age, Mitchell knew he had a knack for such planning. “I’ve always been interested in clothing; not fashion per se, just clothing. I’ve always been good with colors, patterns and shapes. My first job out of college was retail because that’s what was available at the time.” While his career eventually led him to other industries, his love for apparel ultimately brought him to work at a friend’s upscale clothing store. There he learned more about the technical aspect of clothing – measuring, fitting men properly, fabrics and more.

After years of living in Orlando and Tampa, Mitchell and his family wanted a change to a slower-paced, more family-oriented town. He and his wife were familiar with Gainesville because his wife had gone to school here, and with its slower-paced lifestyle and family friendly nature, they knew they had found home. But Mitchell soon realized that for all the area boasted in stores, it was lacking a more personalized shopping touch.

“Other stores here are not customer service driven. They’re functional stores,” he said. “My idea is to take the retail side out of it by saying, ‘I’ll come to you in your timeframe, at your location. If you can provide a great service, backed up by a good product, people will buy from you.”

Mitchell starts a new client relationship with a friendly chat. “We’ll sit down and talk about what you do for a living, what you do in your personal life, how you want to look for those things, how you currently look, do you like it or do you not like it,” he said.

From there Mitchell looks for those aforementioned holes in your wardrobe and begins building a plan to fill those gaps. Often he finds that he can start with pieces the client already has. “We'll look at what you already have. Maybe you’ve not thought of wearing these pants with this shirt, so here’s a good outfit.” Then Mitchell might suggest other items for purchase that would coordinate with what’s already in the client’s closet. This helps Mitchell use the client’s personal taste as a springboard to a whole new look.

Finally, Mitchell provides the client with a book containing pictures of each article of clothing. The pictures are mixed and matched into the varying outfits, making the book a great reference guide for the client long after his last appointment!

John Isaac’s Clothing features off-therack pieces as well as custom-made apparel, but that doesn’t mean you need to pay a small fortune. Because Mitchell comes to you at your convenience, he has no over-head that a retail store requires. This means he can charge very reasonable prices for a higher level of quality and personal service than you’ll find anywhere else. Mitchell can also arrange for a gift presentation of his services, which makes a John Isaac’s consultation a perfect holiday present!

John Isaac’s Clothing has something for everyone, from people who are budget conscious to those who truly want something unique. And unique is something that Mitchell is striving to help everyone achieve. “People tend to buy ‘in the box’ (at a typical store),” he said. “You buy a white shirt and a red tie to go with the blue suit, or you buy a white shirt to go with blue pants. It’s very box-oriented. So I try to get people out of the box, mixing patterns and colors and doing things they might not ordinarily do. Once they see it, they start doing it for themselves.”
